Will Disney Parks Cut Classics to Make Room for Frozen and Tangled?
Date:2014-10-30   Views:1175

With the immense success of animated blockbusters like Tangled and Frozen, there have been new attractions and performances popping up at Disney theme parks around the globe. Earlier this year, we discussed some of our favorite Frozen-themed integrations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The lineup of events included a spectacular sing-a-long, fireworks display, and a welcome procession fit for a queen. Tangled-themed shows and meet and greets have also been recently introduced at Magic Kingdom. Given the popularity of some of Disney’s most recent animated features, it makes sense that the Imagineers would be dreaming up new themed attractions and events to expand their presence at the parks and elsewhere within the Disney empire.

Further expansion is happening on Disney’s fleet of cruise ships. Recently, Disney Cruise lines announced that they would be adding new Tangled and Frozen-themed performances to their live show lineup. According to an article in the Orlando Sentinel, the entertainment team for Disney Magic cruises is searching for actors to play key roles, including Queen Elsa, Rapunzel, and Mother Gothel from Tangled. Rehearsals and casting are scheduled for early next year. Current musical performances on Disney Magic ships include “Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic,” “Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story” and “Villains Tonight!” It’s unclear how the existing lineup will change, but it’s likely that at least one show will be replaced or modified to make way for Tangled and Frozen.

It’s also rumored that theatrical performances in popular Disney theme parks may also be revamped in the coming years. Disney insiders are questioning whether long-standing shows like Disney California Adventure’s popular Aladdin the Musical Spectacular or Hollywood Studios’ Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage could be slated for replacement. While these shows remain quite popular among park guests, they’ve been running for 11 and 23 years respectively. As a result, there has been some compelling speculation as to whether or not the changes that are happening on the Disney Magic are part of a larger plan to eventually refresh the theatrical lineup at popular parks as well.

Whether or not classic live shows like Aladdin the Musical Spectacular and Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage will be replaced by themed performances that focus on new Disney hits remains to be seen. But one thing is for certain. Recent blockbuster hits like Tangled and Frozen don’t have a strong presence at many of the parks yet, and updated performances and attractions could be a draw for many Disney fans. Given the immense popularity of these two animated features, we expect that some classic shows and attractions will be cut or changed to make room for some new additions that appeal to a new generation of Disney fans.

The modified lineup on Disney cruise lines Disney Magic ships will be introduced sometime during 2015, and we will see if the new shows might spur change at other Disney properties. Live shows are certainly a natural fit for the storylines and musical performances that make Tangled and Frozen so delightful. We’ll keep you updated about the new live performances on the Disney Magic fleet, and follow any potential changes to existing theatrical performances in Disney parks.
